If You Hate Your Job, Be Great at It
There was a time I hated my job.
Not because I was lazy. Not because I didn’t care.
I hated it because I didn’t know how to win.
I didn’t know how to handle objections.
I didn’t feel like I was getting the right training.
I felt like I was showing up every day without a real edge.
And in a business with a lot of downtime, that’s the worst place to be — stuck with your thoughts, watching other people win, wondering what you’re missing.
So I made a decision.
If I was going to be here… I was going to be great at it.
I became obsessed with winning.
I didn’t care how long I had to stay.
If the doors were open, I was there.
I stayed positive when times were tough.
I made the best out of slow days.
Most importantly, I stopped relying on management to help me succeed.
I told myself:
“My production is my responsibility.”
That mindset changed everything.
I learned the job.
I studied objections.
I sharpened my approach.
And over time, I went from hating this job… to being great at it.
But here’s the part nobody talks about.
You can do everything right… and still end up feeling bored.
That’s where I am now.
I’m doing the same things that made me successful.
I’m disciplined.
I know how to win.
But I’m not as busy.
The energy is different.
The environment feels off.
And that matters more than people admit.
Your environment will either sharpen you… or drain you.
Are you part of a team that wants to win?
Or are you surrounded by people just trying to survive?
When multiple people start quitting at the same time, that’s not random.
That’s a reflection of leadership.
When numbers are down across the board and nobody has real answers, you feel it.
When management is more focused on their careers than developing people, you notice it.
And even if you’re doing your job right — it can still feel wrong.
So how do you stay positive in a volatile business?
You go back to what got you here.
You control what you can control.
You stay productive — especially during downtime.
Because in this business, downtime is where separation happens.
Are you sharpening your skills?
Following up?
Improving your process?
Or are you sitting, waiting, and hoping something walks in?
Here’s the truth:
Sitting still doesn’t pay the bills.
The market goes up and down.
Leadership changes.
Stores get better or worse.
But your standard can’t.
I’ve realized something recently:
Maybe I’m not bored…
Maybe I’ve outgrown where I am.
But until I make my next move, I’m not going to coast.
I’m setting higher targets.
Bigger goals.
Stronger expectations for myself.
Because at the end of the day — I don’t get paid to feel motivated.
I get paid to win.
And I will win… because that’s what pays.
